Merica, the CEO and Founder of the eco-friendly knitwear company NIA Clothing, is running a Kicktstarter campaign. With the campaign ending in just a few short days on Sunday May 14th, her goal is to collect $12,000 in donations in order to run her very first production of the line. She is just $2,700 short of reaching her goal!
Why you should back NIA!
There’s a saying “be the change you wish to see in the world,” and she’s doing just that. Merica was on the hunt for something she couldn’t seem to find in the fashion industry, so she decided to create it herself. She was looking for comfortable, stylish, eco-friendly and long lasting clothing (the kind of thing you’d find from sites like this: https://oregrown.com/pages/bend-flagship-store). Purpose driven, which is precisely how the name NIA came about. Nia, in Swahili, means purpose.
Did you know that the fashion industry is the second largest water polluter, with oil ringing in at numero uno?! Textiles alone waste 100 million gallons of water, a year. This was the sole purpose behind Merica choosing to use 100% merino wool, a 3D knitting machine and making the clothing locally in Brooklyn, New York. The merino wool is eco-friendly, has a very low impact on our environment and feels luxurious. By using a whole garment knitting machine, the clothing is made without seams, which doubles the comfort.
Funding something like this is a thankless task and crowdfunding offers a chance at success for people like Merica. I think it is important to support people where possible, especially when they are creating something as special as this.
How to style NIA Clothing?
The great thing about NIA knitwear is how versatile the pieces are! Layer up the duo by throwing on this oversized denim jacket from Tobi.com, a pair of sneaks to run your errands in or style with a blazer and head to work. Even dress it up for date night night with a killer heel and the MIA choker. You’ll want to live in these knitwear pieces!
