BROOOOKLYN!! You might have seen recently that I started working with WOODstack IVY, a women’s dedicated lifestyle shop. Have you ever walked by a menswear lifestyle boutique but wish it were women’s clothes? Well, if you take the 3 train out to Sutter Av/Rutland Rd you’ll find one, WOODstack IVY. It’s one of six WOODstack shops and the only one dedicated for just us women. Find casual fashion, sportswear and athleisure clothing plus high energy and extremely fashionable footwear. Let’s just say the buyer for this store knows exactly what he is doing. It’s as if this store was built for me (I’m not kidding). I walk in and literally want everything.
WOODstack had me at hello just with the nuance behind the name; “cultural preservation qualities, the sophisticated aesthetic of wood and street style ambition to acquire more (stacking).” This might be my most exciting collaboration to date (and it goes way beyond just being utterly obsessed with their clothing). The WOODstack brand prides themselves in a culture that services the inner city by completely disrupting and reimagining it. They break it down into three sections; innovative streetwear, community engagement, and product storytelling. This is not your everyday, traditional sneaker boutique. When I tell you that this company is the truth, I mean it.
When you walk into WOODstack IVY you immediately notice their refined collection of clothing and shoes. Premium denim, current tops, specific accessories and your must have foundation wardrobe pieces. Their shoe collection is unparalleled. Sneakers that I’ve never seen before offered in an array of color ways I couldn’t imagine. They carry brands such as Nike, Adidas, Reebok, UGG, Hershel, Roc Nation, Puma, G-Star, North Face and beyond. They carry a wide variety of sizes to cater to real women’s bodies and have G-Star jeans up to size 35. When you first walk into the wood constructed shop, you’d never know how much they do for our community and that’s why I’m so excited and blessed to collaborate with this stellar company. Here’s where it gets pretty incredible…
WOODstack is a leading voice in the community as advocates, mentors, storytellers and pioneers. They break this down into 3 pillars;
1) Educational support for positive change
2) Promotion of fitness by addressing challenges in the community
3) Economic empowerment by offering employment training, second chance employment for misdemeanors and also startup and small biz retail distribution opportunities
Community Engagement for Women
“Kicking It From the Stoop” is a monthly book club hosted by Angela Yee from the Breakfast Club. They invite and welcome guests into WOODstack IVY who enjoy passionate social dialog, have ridiculous style and enjoy recreational reading. It’s the perfect place to network intimately with an inclusive group of women from media, music and fashion. Their latest books read and discussed? “Bed Stuy Is Burning” by Brian Platzer, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” by Issa Rae and “Surpassing Certainty” by James Mock. Girl. This was made for us! Get tickets here to the next book club.
Cage Yoga is a wellness and fitness program curated by WOODstack IVY. For all ages (children and seniors), they make it affordable (free), accessible (held in a local park) and appealing (sonically enhanced with music and glowing headphones). They also offer BK Boot Camp for adults and Kids in Motion for free as well!
“Tree Grows in Brooklyn” is a scholarship program that helps assists underserved students with providing supplemental resources that can often cover the costs of books. They also partner up with local high schools to provide workshops, mentorships, and prepare college students for the workforce. Apply for the scholarship here.
“Raised in the Woods” is a design incubator for Brooklyn based designers. The woodshop provides support for merchandising and sales, marketing, production and distribution that help kickoff their careers in fashion.
“BK Woodworks” is a park adoption program. Each of the WOODstack stores adopts a park and provides free fitness programs within the park, giving access to all.
So, it’s much more than just a dope store that caters to women with fashionable clothing and shoes. These are the places that we need to support ten fold because their support for our community is incomparable. Sure, you’ll walk out of the store looking like 100 Grand draped in the flyest gear, but you’re supporting a local business that gives back in more ways than we can imagine. So, to Tony and the rest of the crew running these programs, y’all are a class act. Much gratitude to you.
